Vol 2, No 1 - Thursday 2 July 2009

Waters covered by this report include Rocky Valley & Pretty Valley reservoirs, Lake Guy and Lake Catani. Also the Kiewa,

Ovens, Bundara, Cobungra, Victoria and Mitta Mitta (upper and lower) rivers, plus numerous mountain streams.

Today is the beginning of a new year for this weekly report. Trout fishing in alpine region rivers and some lakes is mostly on hold now until the spring thaw, when the rivers season opens, the snow melts, and lakes above the snowline become accessible again.

Bogong High Plains: The two lakes on the Bogong High Plains, Rocky Valley and Pretty Valley reservoirs are currently surrounded by deep snow banks and skiers everywhere. Consequently, both of the lakes are inaccessible for trout fishing until sometime in early September when the snow melts.

Lake Guy: Lake Guy at Bogong Village remains at a low level and fishing is just reasonable around the western shoreline. Lures, including Tassie devils, are still getting a few, with brown trout to 750 grams on average being caught.

Mt Beauty Pondage: The Mt Beauty Pondage, which is close to the Mt Beauty township, is high this week and continues to be the best fishing hole in the upper Kiewa Valley at the moment.

Lake Catani: Lake Catani at Mount Buffalo is 100% full (as always, even in summer) and despite winter conditions the fishing continues to be excellent this week.

.

The road into the lake is now closed  for the winter so anglers are required to walk about one kilometre to reach the best spots

Ovens River: The Ovens River at Bright is closed to trout fishing until Saturday 5th September. However,it is available for fishing for other fish species. The river is running high and fishing fairly well lately although only a few more hardy anglers are about at the moment.

Kiewa River: The Kiewa River from Tawonga to Keegans Bridge is closed to all fishing until September. The river is running high, cold and clear following some good rains this week.

The river downstream from Keegans Bridge remains available for fishing for species other than trout. Check out the book that came with your fishing licence for fishing rules and conditions for these fish species.

That’s about the lot for now, with not much happening anywhere. Winter has arrived here with a vengeance this week, with wild storms and heavy snow up high and continuous rainfalls in the lower mountain regions and river valleys. But who’s complaining? This sort of weather can only help ensure anglers enjoy a great new trout fishing season, come September.

Fly Fishing Tuition: Would you like to be able to expertly cast a delicate dry fly with ease and accuracy so that it lands on the water as gently as thistledown right where a large trout is feeding? If the answer is ‘YES’, then contact the professionals, Angling Expeditions Victoria, who are the only resident fly fishing instructors and guides in northeast Victoria’s alpine region.

Since 1995, Angling Expeditions have been based in Tawonga in the upper Kiewa Valley on the Kiewa River. In that time they have taught literally thousands of people the genteel art of fly fishing from the most basic fundamentals to the more technical aspects of the craft.

To make further enquires or to book a session phone Angling Expeditions Victoria on (03) 5754 1466 or email Geoff at info@anglingvic.com.au and be ready for the 2009/10 season.
